The WNBA season is in full swing, and the New York Liberty are back and better than ever. Thanks to one of the greatest offseasons in league history, the Liberty are in a position to do something extraordinary. New York has not won a professional basketball championship since the 1970s, and the Liberty have a chance to end the drought. With the firepower in the lineup, the Liberty are promising to be one of the best and most exciting teams in sports this year.
The Las Vegas Aces are standing in the way, but New York is built to compete. Fans’ calendars are circled for the first of four meetings between the superteams on June 29 in Vegas. There is a long way to go before that matchup, and there are some big games awaiting the Liberty in the meantime.
On Sunday afternoon, the Liberty got their first win of 2023 against the Indiana Fever in the home opener at a sold-out Barclays Center. Following the conclusion of the game, The Local W’s Brian Fleurantin got a chance to chat with Erica Ayala of Black Rosie Media on the ‘Gotta Get Up’ podcast. In a wide-ranging conversation, we touched on the following:
- The first two games of the 2023 season
- The turning point for the Liberty in 2022
- The sleeper acquisition of the off-season
- The importance of athleticism on this New York Liberty roster
- Roster versatility and how the center rotation of Jonquel Jones, Stefanie Dolson, Han Xu and Nyara Sabally will be utilized
- How Breanna Stewart was able to attack the Fever defense and set the Liberty scoring record
