The New York Liberty look to keep improving

Road trips are always daunting. When you’re far from home, you have to come together as a team and make the most of tough circumstances. For the New York Liberty, this western swing comes at an especially difficult time.

Jonquel Jones will be out at least four to six weeks as she reaggravated a right ankle injury. Leonie Fiebich is competing at Eurobasket and will be back in a few weeks. At 11-3, the defending champions have played well but still have room for improvement.

Breanna Stewart has led the way for the Liberty as she’s third in the WNBA in scoring at 21 points per game. Stewie is able to score in a variety of ways and is one of the most efficient scorers in basketball. She and Sabrina Ionescu have been a dynamic scoring duo and have kept the Liberty afloat even without the Finals MVP.

I recently joined Dexter Henry of New York Got Game to talk all things New York Liberty!

Dexter and I discussed:

  • how the team will withstand the absence of Jonquel Jones
  • the Liberty needing to execute better coming out of halftime and avoiding slow starts
  • maintaining the energy and effort needed to defend their WNBA championship
  • Jaylyn Sherrod excelling in her limited minutes
  • the importance of playing well on this four game road trip
  • what the Liberty need to do to beat teams like the Phoenix Mercury and Atlanta Dream

So far on the road trip, the Liberty have gone 1-1, with a loss to the Seattle Storm and win against the Golden State Valkyries. They’ve got two more games to go before they get a few days off as we enter the month of July.
