Well, look who’s coming home.
Gotham FC, the reigning champions of, well, everything, just opened their checkbook and sent a cool $175,000 in transfer funds out to San Diego Wave FC. But they didn’t just buy a player; they bought back a piece of their own story. They bought a closing chapter for a journey that started nearly a decade ago.
Savannah McCaskill is back. The 29-year-old midfielder, who first turned pro with this club back when it was called Sky Blue FC in 2018, is returning to where it all began. This isn’t a transaction. It’s a full-circle moment dressed in cleats.
The Athlete Translation: Why McCaskill Chose Gotham
“I’ve been impressed by what the club has been able to do,” McCaskill said, which is athlete for, ‘You guys have a trophy case now. I’d like to add to it.’ She talked about unlocking new levels and contributing to a competitive environment. Translation: The champs called. You answer.
Furthermore, McCaskill isn’t the same player who left New Jersey years ago. She left as a kid with potential, the second overall pick in the 2018 Dispersal Draft. She returns as a hardened vet with 180 NWSL appearances, 24 goals, and a suitcase full of experience from Chicago, Louisville, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
A Proven Winner and Midfield Asset
During her career, she has consistently been a difference-maker. She was an NWSL Second XI star with Angel City, where she piled up goals and assists. More recently, she won a Challenge Cup with the Wave in 2024. Now, she’s seen the summit from the other side and wants back on the mountain.
“Her familiarity with our environment will be a valuable asset,” said Gotham GM Yael Averbuch West. That’s code for: She knows the pressure here, and she won’t flinch.
Redemption After Injury
Last season in San Diego, McCaskill was a warrior, starting 20 of 21 matches before an untimely foot injury in September stole her playoffs. Because of this, she’s not coming for a victory lap; she’s coming for redemption.
So, while the rich got richer, they also got wiser. They didn’t just acquire a midfielder; they acquired a leader with something to prove all over again. The prodigal daughter has returned, and she’s not here to see the old sights. She’s here to help build new ones.
Welcome home, Savannah. The story you started eight years ago? It’s time to write the best part yet.
